Girls Empowerment Programme (GEP)

Region: Kuria and West Pokot

Description of the:
The programme empowers girls who have suffered FGM or other forms of violence against women. It promotes the opportunity for self-determination and offers them a safe space in difficult times.

Results:
More than two thirds of all participants are are no longer at risk of FGM. Their families support them in of their decision. They also show surprisingly positive developments in their self-confidence and in the academic performance.

Project partner:
The project is being realised together with The Rain Workers, Tukutane e.V. and Zinduka Kenya. 

Other funding partners are:
Amina, Action Five e.V., Stiftung Mensch und Tier, Soroptimist International Club Bonn.

Community Outreaches

Regions: Eastleigh, Kuria, West Pokot

Project: Hooyo Haigoynin

Description of the:
In the Eastleigh project, which translates as "Mum, circumcise me! not", a total of 3120 people were reached. They are drawn from the various target groups (those affected, men, children, adolescents and families) and have been the consequences of FGM, the anti-FGM law in Kenya, and further trained. All participants belong to the Somali community in Kenya.

Results:
The project has made a significant contribution to to raise awareness of the problem and create a to promote open dialogue. This led to a supportive environment in which everyone takes responsibility for ending FGM and violence against women/girls can take over. Cultural sensitivity in order to take local conditions into account without jeopardise the safety and dignity of those affected.

Project partners:
The project is being realised together with Men End FGM planned, designed and implemented, and the pilot was Nala e.V. promoted.

Project: School visits

Description of the:
The school visits include holistic training for pupils in various schools in Kuria, Migori, Kenya. The team provides information and knowledge on reproductive health and rights (SRHR), sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and female genital mutilation (FGM). For explanation illustrated posters that we have developed together with and based on the needs of the community. In addition, the tools from The Rain Workers used and each student receives our flyerswhich contain a summary of FGM in Kuria.

Results:
In 2023, our team in Kuria educated 1368 pupils about reproductive health and rights as well as topics related to FGM. Our flyers contain the most important information and a telephone number that they can call in an emergency.

Project: Home visits

Description of the:
Through door-to-door home visits, our team regularly visits the families participating in our programmes. Each person is spoken to individually and the situation within the family is evaluated. In addition, relevant topics from the programmes can be discussed again and explored in greater depth. 

Results
:
In 2023, over 700 persons in Curia visited. These activities provide ongoing support for girls at risk throughout the year by mobilising resources to identify them and provide them with the help they need during visits that follow the initial contact.

This allows our team to find out first-hand how each person in the family is doing and whether there are any problems or risks.

Project partners:
The project is planned and implemented by Zinduka Kenya. However, the home visits also take place as part of the GEP and are organised jointly with The Rain Workers and Tukutane e.V. financed and implemented on site.

Radio talk shows

Regions: Kuria and West Pokot

Description of the:
The radio talk shows are a series with a total of 10 radio shows, each lasting just under 2 hours. 
Each radio show focusses on a different topic and is led by experts from the field and the community. Focussed topics include the consequences of FGM, led by medical staff; FGM and religion, led by religious representatives; FGM and education, led by teaching staff; FGM and the law, led by legal staff.

Results:
Round 500,000 persons in the region Curia and more than 1.5 million listeners in West Pokotwith additional reach in the districts Eastern UgandaBaringo, Elgeiyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu, Bungoma and Turkana listened intently to our #EndFGM radio campaign.

 

The project achieved impressive results, such as the active dialling in of listeners and many calls and thank-you messages, as well as further questions about the content. With a total of 20 shows, the campaign aimed to equip these people with the necessary knowledge to have enough information about violent traditional practices to make their own decisions against them.

The project is planned and implemented by Zinduka Kenya. However, the radio talk shows also take place as part of the GEP and are organised together with The Rain Workers and Tukutane e.V. financed and implemented on site.
