href=\"https:\/\/www.endfgm.eu\/\">EU End FGM Network<\/a> FGM exists on all continents except Antarctica.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-833d69b elementor-blockquote--align-left elementor-blockquote--button-view-icon elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-skin-classic elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"833d69b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div law in Kenya since 2011. However, it is still practised throughout the country as a traditional ceremony. Each region or tribe has its own reasons for carrying out FGM. All reasons are about money or social status. None of the reasons are beneficial to the health of the girls or women or have any other positive effect on health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Kuria, where most of our projects take place, the reasons include:<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f320b93 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f320b93\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Growing up<\/strong><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is said that girls become women through mutilation and are recognised.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Show courage<\/strong><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A girl who is circumcised and does not scream or cry is considered brave and strong.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Member of the company<\/strong><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only after circumcision is a woman allowed to participate in cultural traditions.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Symbol of \"purity\"<\/strong><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is said that the mutilation guarantees the husband virginity and \"purity\".<\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Marriage<\/strong><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most men only accept \"pure\" women.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Dowry<\/strong><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dowry for the girl's parents is often higher if she is circumcised. Poor families in particular are dependent on this.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Celebrations and gifts<\/strong><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Circumcision is accompanied by a big celebration and lots of gifts. The money, the gifts and the recognition are an attraction for girls and families, increasingly also from poor backgrounds.<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b35717 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3b35717\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forms of female genital mutilation<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-09fd9f1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"09fd9f1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are four different types of FGM. FGM type I can be divided into two subtypes:<\/span><\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Type Ia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Exclusive removal of the clitoral hood.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Type Ib<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/span>Removal of the clitoral glans with the clitoral hood.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Type II<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Partial or complete removal of the clitoris and labia minora (\"labia minora\"), with or without removal of the labia majora (\"labia majora\"). FGM type II can be subdivided into the following subtypes:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b><b>Type IIa.<\/b><\/b><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exclusive removal of the labia minora.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b><b>Type IIb.<\/b><\/b><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partial or complete removal of the clitoris and labia minora (clitoral hood may be affected).<\/span><\/p><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b><b>Type IIc.<\/b><\/b><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Partial or complete removal of the clitoral glans, labia minora and labia majora (clitoral hood may be affected).<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Type III.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Often also known as <strong>Infibulation<\/strong> labelled). Narrowing or closure of the vaginal entrance. The closure is created by incising and repositioning the labia minora or labia majora. The vaginal opening is closed with or without removal of the clitoral hood and glans (type I FGM). FGM type III can be subdivided into the following subtypes:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Type IIIa<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Removal and repositioning of the labia minora.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b><b>Type IIIb.<\/b><\/b><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Removal and repositioning of the labia minora.<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Type IV.<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All other harmful interventions on the female genitalia for non-medical purposes, e.g. pricking, piercing, cutting, scraping and cauterising.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under <strong>Deinfibulation<\/strong> is the cutting open of the closed vaginal opening of a woman who has been infibulated (type III). This is often done to enable sexual intercourse or to facilitate childbirth and is often necessary to improve the woman's health and well-being.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e01aefe elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e01aefe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequences of FGM<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d17c217 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d17c217\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are no positive effects of FGM, it can cause a number of serious health harms, risks and consequences for the circumcised women. We have listed just a few of them here:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Psychological trauma<\/strong><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FGM is usually carried out without anaesthesia, and women are often held down and forced to undergo genital mutilation against their will.&nbsp;<br><br><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Life-threatening infections (e.g. HIV)<br><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mutilation is carried out with unwashed razor blades or broken glass somewhere in a field. Due to the unhygienic conditions, the women become infected with various diseases.<br><br><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Death<\/strong><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not uncommon for the girls to die as a result of the haemorrhaging.<br><br><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Complications during delivery<br><\/b>Depending on the type of circumcision, there may be deep scars and missing parts of the vulva, which can lead to serious complications during labour.&nbsp;<br><br><\/li>\n<li><b>Loss of an organ<br><\/b>After removal, sexual arousal is no longer possible for some women, and severe pain can also occur during sexual intercourse.<br><br><\/li>\n<li><b>Urinary tract infections, incontinence<br><\/b>The entire urogenital area can also be seriously affected by the severe injury.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-deec514 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"deec514\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>Female genital mutilation (FGM) in Germany<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-80e275e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"80e275e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The German government has banned the practice of genital mutilation by law:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since September 2013, female genital mutilation has been classified as a separate criminal offence in Section 226a of the German Criminal Code (StGB) and can be punished with a prison sentence of six months to five years.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germany has also developed a letter of protection that exists in several languages in countries where FGM is carried out. It clearly states that FGM is illegal, even if you leave the country to carry it out abroad.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5); color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-style: inherit; text-align: var(--text-align); font-weight: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var(--ast-global-color-5);\">Nevertheless, FGM has increased due to the high level of immigration to Germany. <a href=\"https:\/\/frauenrechte.de\/\">Terre des Femmes<\/a> appreciated:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As in previous years, the number of girls and women affected by and at risk of FGM is increasing enormously.
